String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1183537 Composed by Joseph Bo…
(+)
String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1183537 Composed by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St. Georges. Arranged by Robert Debbaut. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Multicultural,World. 57 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #783210. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.1183537). How is it that one can be born a slave in French colonial Guadeloupe and rise to be among Paris’ musical giants, to become a colonel in the French Army as well as the frequent dinner guest of princes and potentates? The story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is surely an interesting one, even the stuff of which movies are made.Joseph Bologne’s father, Georges Bologne de Saint-Georges was a French planter. Saint-Georges was the name of his plantation. He impregnated Anne, the Senegalese slave of his wife, who bore him a son in 1745. Uncharacteristic of many of these sort of relationships he acknowledged the child was his and gave him his family name. When he was seven Bologne’s father took him to Paris for his education, enrolling him in a boarding school. Two years later he and the child’s mother returned to France and set up housekeeping as a family in Paris’ Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. At age thirteen Joseph’s father enrolled him in the Royal Technical Academy of Fencing and Swordsmanship. He quickly became the finest swordsman in the academy, perhaps in all of Paris. Upon graduation he was made an Officer of the King’s Bodyguard and a chevalier (an honorary knighthood). He went on to serve tours of duty in the French Army during the Seven Years War (1756-1763) and later after the French Revolution, where he was Colonel and commander of an all-Black regiment of the Revolutionary Army. All this in spite of the fact that French law forbade him, a man of African heritage, to become a citizen, to retain his father’s royal title of “Gentleman of the King’s Chamber,†or to marry outside his class. There is limited information about Bologne’s musical training, but he was obviously so well-skilled that Italian violinist-composer Antonio Lolli (1725-1802) wrote two violin concertos for him and French composer François-Joseph Gossec (1734-1829) dedicated his set of String Trios, Op. 9 to Bologne. Lolli may have worked with him on violin technique and Gossec composition, but this may be apocryphal. Bologne played in Gossec’s orchestra, and was later both leader and conductor of the group. As a composer Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and were published by the Paris publishing house of Jean-Georges Sieber (1738-1822) in 1773 (There are a total of 18 quartets: Six Quartets “au goût du jour†[up-to-date] from 1779 and the Opus 14 set of six which date from 1785). The Opus 1 quartets are dedicated to Anne Louis Alexandre de Montmorency (1724-1812), 7th Prince of Robeck (Robecq) and Grand Duke of Spain. The Opus 1 quartets all display a similarity to the Italian opera overtures from earlier in the Eighteenth Century (often called “sinfoniaâ€) in that they have an overall “A-B-A†form with the ‘A’ sections being robust allegros and all ‘B’ sections marked “rondo.†As such, in arranging them for string orchestra it seemed quite natural to rename them “overtures.†Certain liberties were taken by the arranger in order to maintain the integrity of the classic Rondo formula. All six have been arranged in this manner for string orchestra. They vary in length from twelve to almost twenty minutes. If you wish to obtain parts, write to debbaut@gmail.com and pay $42 via venmo or $40 via personal check and they will be sent to you in pdf format.

Published by Nigel Pendrey (A0.1093732). To the memory of Robert and Robert Drever father and son lost at sea on a calm night off the island of Sanday, Orkney 31 August 1999. The two had set out to collect lobster pots that day. The first sign that things were amiss was the early return of the dog, which arrived home wet and exhausted. Despite extensive searches only the body of the son has to date been found. The boat was located and raised. The cause of the tragedy is still a mystery. The title is from a poem of William Blake.

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533700 Composed by Carson Cooman. Baroque,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 38 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3038895. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533700). Concerto for Portatif Organ and Strings (2006) was commissioned by the HarvardBaroque Chamber Orchestra and its director, Robert Mealy. The work is dedicatedto organist Nancy Granert, for whom the solo part was written. The work wascommissioned in celebration of the von Clemm Chamber Organ at The MemorialChurch, Harvard University, built in 2006 by Klop Organ Builders. As with many of my works, relationships between old and new musical concepts areexplored. In this piece, musical aspects of the Baroque organ concerto tradition(and Baroque style string playing) co-exist with more contemporary musicalelements. In particular, the directness of expression found in many Baroqueconcertante works is present throughout. Musical material is shared between themovements in a motivic fashion. The title of the first movement, Bricolage, is defined as “something made or puttogether using whatever materials happen to be available.†Thus, the musicalmaterial for the movement is of varying characters; these elements are assembledtogether in ways that allow them to comment on and inform each other. Some ofthese musical elements include: a traditional “overture†texture, a Basse deTrompette texture (with an organ reed stop in the left hand) common in FrenchBaroque organ music, and the French keyboard toccata style. The second movement, Elegia, is dark and searching in tone. It begins with arageful roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material – a simple“lament†theme in a folk-inflected style. This material is used for further explorations, building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this timewith a whisper. The movement winds down to a sad conclusion. After the soul-searching of the second movement, the third movement, Rondeau, issprightly and energetic. The basic material is a set of Baroque and Classical-stylefigurations (with a few American gospel inflections thrown in), firmly grounded in Gmajor. After minor diversions, the original material continues to return and ends thework with unfettered joy. This item is the score only. The allegro uses a contrasting set of two themes, one of which is syncopated and dancelike, the other which is lyrical and expressive. The Aria which follows is in an ABA lied form with extended passage work for the soloist at the return of the theme. The Rondo-finale is a rollicking scherzo which is presented in a variety of forms, first in the saxophone and then in the violins, after several developmental passages and a final cadenza, returns to end the work with a final flourish. A reduction for alto saxophone is avaialble as a different item. The orchestral parts are available on rentel from the publisher.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.OMS153). 9 x 12 in inches.Picture Pennsylvania's natural beauty as it was seen by the pioneers: a misty morning, vast expanses of tree-filledwilderness, the seemingly endless Allegheny River stretching far into the distance. A river meant water forlivestock and agriculture, and the possibility of navigating the waterway for commerce. The energetic main themedepicts these sturdy settlers' aspirations and explorations. But the solemnity gives way to the merry fiddle tune of abarn dance. A wistful waltz in a minor mode contrasts their hardship and loneliness. The main theme returns a newkey, signifying determination and confidence. The piece ends as it began, with a query expressed by the violins, pondering what the future may hold.

String Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.1031265 Composed by Andrew Tilles. Contemporary. Score and parts. 20 pages. Andrew Tilles #3068659. Published by Andrew Tilles (A0.1031265). Restless Waters is an energetic piece for intermediate string orchestra. A catchy D minor melody inspired by sea shanties makes up the main theme. A slower cantabile section in D major represents the short-lived eye of the storm. This is followed by the return of the main theme, which gets passed around the orchestra to an exciting ending. Every section has an interesting and important part. There isn't a dull moment in Restless Waters. Restless Waters is a great introduction to 3rd position for your 1st violin section. Where 3rd position is used for 1st violins and cellos, there are optional notes written in for differentiated instruction.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.922634 Composed by Johann Strauss Jr. Arranged by Aaron Meier. Romantic Period,World. Score and parts. 1 pages. Aaron Meier #5792359. Published by Aaron Meier (A0.922634). Original by Johann Strauss II Reduction to String Orchestra by Aaron Meier Part: Violin I True to the original work by Strauss, this reduction for string orchestra features the ornaments and mystical writing that defines Strauss' polkas. There are optional percussion parts to be added at the discretion of the ensemble, however even without percussion the ensemble will sound full (the percussion acts as an ornament). Difficulty: Intermediate-advanced - advanced (best-suited for advanced student ensembles) --- Performance Notes: • Approximate length: 3:30 minutes • 1st Violins: In m. 1, trill a half step from a D♠to a D♮ • 2nd Violins:  - At m. 42, divide players by 3, with 2 players playing line A and the remaining player playing line B  - At m. 72-75, emphasize the E♠in the div. • Snare Drum: The buzz roll needs to be quieter than how it is played in the midi recording (*see YouTube link ↓) History: The Olga-Polka itself owed its creation to a Russian royal wedding which took place in St. Petersburg on 28 August 1857. On that day, amid accompanying splendour, the music-loving Grand Duke Michail Nikolaievich (1832-1909), youngest brother of Tsar Alexander II, married Princess Caecilie of Baden (1839-91), daughter of Archduke Leopold of Baden. Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden. It was under this title, too, that Johann himself first conducted the work in Vienna at a concert in the Volksgarten on 1 November 1857, shortly after his return from Russia. Reporting on this event, the Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (3.11.1857) observed: The 'Olga-Polka' is a most delightful, fragrant musical bouquet, full of fine, gracious rhythms. String Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.933524 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, Cees Nieuwenhuizen. Arranged by Upstream Music. Classical. Score and parts. 24 pages. Upstream Music #6353319. Published by Upstream Music (A0.933524). The Prelude and Fugue in C major were created during the period of study with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, who lived from February 3, 1736 to March 7, 1809. Albrechtsberger was an Austrian theoretician and pedagogue of music, an organist, as well as a composer. He entered upon his career early as a choirboy in the choir of the monastery of Melk, Austria. There he was discovered by the crown prince, the later emperor Joseph II. The latter facilitated an appointment as the court organist.Later Albrechtsberger became conductor of the chapel choir of the famous Stephansdom in Vienna. Albrechtsberger was a highly praised pedagogue; Beethoven, too, was among his pupils. It was this composer that studied with Albrechtsberger from January 1794 to March/May 1795. Together with Beethoven, Albrechtsberger researched all forms of the counterpoint, which is most manifest in the large number of exercises passed down; over 300 studies, fugues etc. have been preserved with corrections and alterations by Albrechtsberger. During this period of study, greater works were also composed, such as the Dona Nobis Pacem (Hess A57), the Prelude and Fugue in E minor (Hess 29), the Prelude and Fugue in F major (Hess 30) and the present one in C major (Hess 31). The piece was probably composed in 1794-95; this opus also shows numerous improvements and alterations by his master, although some alterations are by Beethoven himself. The manuscript of the work is to be found in Vienna, and did not appear in print until 1967 for the first time. The present version sticks closely to Beethoven’s, but has been provided with a double bass part so as to adapt the work for being performed with a larger strength than for which it was originally written. The strength originally intended by Beethoven was two violins, a viola and a cello, so as a string quartet. With the supplementary bass part, the piece can also be played by a string orchestra, which will no doubt promote its dissemination and familiarity. In a sense, the work is already a preliminary study for the string quartets Opus 18 produced later.Especially the rhythm, melodic forms, and the counterpoint applied, frequently return in these string quartets. Beethoven has hardly indicated any rests in the empty bars; Cees has as yet added them. The phrasing, dynamics and time indications have also been added. Beethoven merely writes down the notes, while we have to accept the fact that various notes have been changed by Albrechtsberger but Beethoven’s notes might have been just as interesting. Of some notes it was not clear what Beethoven exactly meant; in such a case, Cees has adhered to the harmonious form, adapting the notes which, logically speaking, fit in with the harmonic unity.

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.800323 Composed by Sarah Wallin Huff. 20th Century,Contemporary,Spiritual. Score and Parts. 88 pages. Novel Soundtrax #2035933. Published by Novel Soundtrax (A0.800323). Completed in 2013, this work is A Romantic Expression Based on King Solomon's Song of Songs. Flirting with musical and dramatic elements from Medieval Europe to the ancient Middle East and Ancient Greek Theatre, Of Roses and Lilies features the solo soprano in the role of The Woman; she expresses her love, devotion, and delight toward her Lover while the Daughters of Jerusalem - as with that of the collective commentary of a Greek chorus - listen and engage with The Woman in her tales touting the glories of her Beloved. The work is in three major sections after the expressive and fluid introduction: the first in A Minor, introducing the characters and their vivd emotions; the second in A Major, during which The Woman shares a tale of her Lover calling her to escape with him into the night... For the winter is past and the rain gone... -when for a moment she hesitates, she wonders if she is too late, only to find that he is still there waiting for her, encouraging her with the sweet words of his continued adoration toward her; the third section returns to the original themes in A Minor, yet gains an expression of great power and fervency as The Woman's love for her Beloved utterly transforms her.

Machinations for string orchestra

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.940136 Composed by Paul Sweet. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 29 pages. Paul Sweet Music #5771341. Published by Paul Sweet Music (A0.940136). Machinations, a 4 minute concert piece perfect for advanced high school or college level players, opens in a sort of rhythmic and tonal gridlock. Short sequences of notes in each part overlap and struggle to break free from the others, sometimes shifting slightly upward or downward. Slowly, new harmonies and dissonances are created by these shifts, taking the music to a breaking point where a new theme finally pushes through. A more outgoing middle section surges ahead relentlessly, each of the parts working now more as a group than before. Eventually, though, it becomes clear that the gridlock of the beginning must return. The third and final section seems at first to be a repeat of the opening material, but the appearance of music from the middle section lets the listener know this is not the case. Themes from all over the work soon blend and overlap, growing in intensity until the climax implodes and the work comes to a quiet and uneasy end. Machinations, by definition, are plots or schemes. I imagined, as I wrote the work, that each instrumental part was scheming about how it would break free from the rigid and meticulous pattern of the opening measures. By the same token, it was clear that some undefined force was plotting ways to keep the music in this form. Imagine these secret plots and maneuvers as you play or conduct the work for maximum effectiveness.
